It sort of hurt. Mild at first. It's intensity increased slowly. A dull throb began. Her heartbeat ached in the silence. She could hear no other sound. Faster. Her heartbeat was louder now. The pain increased as she moved. Right foot left foot. Bam. Bam. Bam. Bam. Her foot hitting the pavement. Again. Again. Harder. Harder. She couldn't stop. She couldn't see. Blindly, lights and shops whizzed by. The corner of her eyes half paying attention to where she was going. Her bare feet continued their pounding against the cool pavement. Bam. Bam. They ached. The occasional rock tearing into the already swollen tender flesh. Reaching the corner she darted between buildings, and continued to run. Pound. Pound. The sound of her heart in her ears. Pound. Pound. Like gunshots. Bam. Bam. Thack. The sound of her knee cap hit the pavement with a crunching sound. Her legs had failed her. Wincing in pain, she tried to stand and fell again. Crawling painfully through the dirt using one hand as leverage, she disappeared into the dark alley. Her left hand came to rest on her lap, settling her precious cargo firmly in her grasp. A flickering street light caught the shadow of her image, and loaf of bread shone like gold in her lap. She was hungry.
